How I Got Started
I am originally from Nova Scotia and grew up immersed in the Scottish Culture. I began highland dancing when I was five years old and after four years of competing, I moved on to other disciplines. There is a picture of me as a young boy in the local Antigonish newspaper that shows me watching the athletes competing. I have always been amazed with the Scottish Heavy Events because of the degree of difficulty, technique and athleticism required. After many years of soccer and tae kwon do throughout grade school, I began wrestling and football at university. I competed at the Canadian National Wrestling Championships four years in a row and received special honors in football. Meanwhile I continued to run my own, successful, tae kwon do club (120 students). After graduating from university in 1994, I began practicing for the Scottish Heavy Events. I trained two hours a day on the caber toss and two months later, I entered my first competition. I placed second in the caber and have had continued success in this event. Five years later I am totally focused on Scottish Heavy Events and haven't looked back since.
